The Kerala Assembly today (9 August) unanimously passed a resolution brought by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to urge the centre to rename the state as 'Keralam' in all languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

Chief Minister Vijayan stated that while the state is called 'Keralam' in Malayalam, it is known as Kerala in other languages.

This comes a day after the Assembly unanimously passed a resolution against the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

As per the Constitution, the name of a state can be changed by the Parliament through a simple majority. However, a Bill for the same has to introduced on the recommendation of the President.

Before the introduction of the Bill, the President should have sent it to the respective state assembly which would express its opinion within a stipulated period of time. The opinion of the state assembly would however not be binding on the President or Parliament.
