Nikhil Thomas, who used a fake degree certificate to secure admission in the MCom course at MSM College, Kayamkulam, allegedly paid Rs 2.5 lakh for it, according to a report in Mathrubhumi.

A former leader of the Students Federation of India (SFI) from Kandalloor is believed to have helped him to get the certificate.

Thomas had studied BCom during 2017-20 at MSM College but he had failed to clear his exams. He then allegedly produced a fake certificate from Kalinga University, Raipur to take admission in the MCom course in 2021.

He has now been expelled by both the Students Federation of India (SFI) as well as the CPM.

The police have not been able to trace him yet.

Governor Arif Mohammad Khan has sought a detailed report about the incident. In what has been interpreted as criticism of the SFI, he recently said that some students are feeling that they could get away with any illegal activity after becoming a member of a particular students union.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested K Vidya, another former SFI leader, who allegedly submitted a fake experience certificate to apply for a position of guest lecturer at a government college. Vidya had been absconding for the past few weeks.
