All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami today (5 July) said that the party opposes the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) being proposed by the centre.

He said that the party would stick to what it had said regarding the issue in its 2019 election manifesto. The manifesto had said, "AIADMK will urge Government of India not to bring any amendments to the Constitution for a Uniform Civil Code that will adversely affect the religious rights of minorities of India."

The statement comes after a meeting of district secretaries in Chennai.

According to political commentators, the AIADMK might have resorted to this step to shed the 'anti-minority' tag that has got affixed to the party in the state after its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

AIAMDK leaders have earlier said that the party had lost a major chunk of the Muslim vote to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) due to the alliance with the BJP.
