Mafia-turned-politician, five-time Member of Parliament and MLA Atiq Ahmed is set to be brought back to Uttar Pradesh, as a state police team reached Sabarmati jail on Tuesday (11 April).
A police team including an inspector-in-charge and 30 constables reached Sabarmati after a production warrant was issued in the Umesh Pal murder case.
A 'Warrant B' was issued on 8 April that requires Ahmed to be presented before the Allahabad Court within a week, which is, before 15 April. An FIR was filed under Section 147 accusing Ahmed and his son, among 13 others, in the case of the murder of Umesh Pal on 24 February.
“We are following the decision of the court, now criminals will not be able to escape Uttar Pradesh. The government is monitoring the whole matter, and our aim is to get the harshest punishment,” said Brajesh Pathak, Deputy Chief Minister to ANI.
Soon after the police convoy began their return journey, Atiq Ahmed said, “This is not right. They want to kill me.” Atique was also quoted saying that “It’s because of you (media) that I am safe,” while on his way to Prayagraj.
Ahmed was previously sentenced to life imprisonment in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case of 2006, on 28 March. Meanwhile, his absconding wife has been denied a ticket in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh urban local body polls to be held in May by the Bahujan Samaj Party.
He was also booked in an Aadhar card forgery case linked to the murder of Umesh Pal along with his wife and five others, on 10 April.
Meanwhile, a Lucknow CBI court framed charges against Ahmed and his son in a 2018 extortion, kidnapping, and assault case. The trial in this case is set to begin on 21 April.
