50 Ground Reports Project

The election dates are out, and the results are predictable in its overall outcome, right?

We asked ourselves: what could we possibly do that could make this an interesting (and important) election?

Contrary to the prevailing narratives and predictable outcomes, this election has many interesting aspects to it.

A strong anti-New Delhi sentiment appears to prevail in Punjab, spilling over in the form of farm protests. The Maratha protests show that even in large states there are significant caste fault lines that can be exploited by parties. Government staff are not likely to favour parties that took away the old pension schemes. Why did Dalit politics collapse in Uttar Pradesh?

In places like Tamil Nadu, the BJP is looking to fight an entire political philosophy with K Annamalai. Will Bengal elections be peaceful and can BJP penetrate further than what it did last time?

These are some of the key themes that we will be covering this election season.

Swarajya will be doing over 50 ground reports working on aspects that the mainstream will over-look. Our themes will extend beyond the immediate context of Modi's re-election and have a long term impact on India's socio-political scaffolding. These are stories that matter in the larger scheme of things.

This is the first in the series of articles in which we will explain our 50 Ground Reports project and requesting that you sponsor some of our work. A typical ground report costs in excess of ₹15,000 - it would be great if you can pitch in for the work that we do and support the ground reports project.

We had a tremendous response to our 50 Ground Reports project during the last general elections. We're hoping that, you, our readers will back us once again - the contexts, the narratives and outcomes are different but it's not any less important.
