Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has criticised the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), alleging that its student wing, the Students' Federation of India (SFI), attacked the vehicle of Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan.

Tharoor, in a post on X, denounced the police under Communist rule as "agents of lawlessness" and accused them of complicity in the ruling party's "worst excesses".

Referring to an NDTV article on the alleged attack, Tharoor expressed dismay over the "disgraceful behaviour" by SFI activists blocking the Governor's car and assaulting the vehicle.

He labelled the police under Communist rule as complicit in allowing the assault on the Governor and the mistreatment of peaceful student demonstrators against the Chief Minister.

On Monday (11 December), SFI activists reportedly attacked the Governor's vehicle as he headed to the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.

Governor Khan accused Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of sending goons to harm him, alleging a conspiracy.

Despite the Congress and CPI-M being allies in the INDI Alliance bloc at the national level, they are political rivals in Kerala.

Tensions between the Kerala government and the Governor have escalated over the years, with the government accusing Khan of sitting on bills.

The incident underscores the internal dynamics and differences within the INDI Alliance, with opposition parties functioning as allies nationally but adversaries in regional politics.
