Amid the ongoing hunt for Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh, the Uttarakhand Police have issued alert in Dehradun, Haridwar, and Udham Singh Nagar districts amid the reports that the fugitive radical Khalistani preacher may enter the state.

On Thursday (22 May), the Punjab Police in a joint operation with Haryana Police have arrested a woman identified as Baljeet Kaur for harbouring Amritpal Singh and his aide Pappalpreet Singh at her home in Kurukshetra, Haryana on 19 March.

Baljit told the police that Amritpal was carrying a gun when he reached her house, Indian Express reported citing sources.

She told the police that Amritpal and Pappalpreet used her mobile phone to make a few calls that indicated that they were planning to move to Uttarakhand.

The Punjab police had launched the operation to nab Amritpal on 18 March but even after six days, the police is yet to catch him.

After the reports that Amritpal may enter Uttarakhand, the state police issued an alert in three districts that share border with Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal.

"An alert has been issued in Dehradun, Haridwar, and Udhamsinghnagar districts of the state as a precaution in view of the possibility of pro-Khalisthan Amritpal Singh entering the state," Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar Singh was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

He said that the police is conducting intensive checking on the borders of all three districts and in other areas.

The action by Uttarakhand police comes as some reports cited source within Punjab police as saying that Amritpal may try to flee to Nepal via Uttarakhand, which shares border with the Himalayan nation.

The Uttarakhand police has also reinforce the security checks on Nepal border.

Further, posters of Amritpal and his aides have been put up at various places in border areas of Udham Singh Nagar to nab him.
