'First Amendment Curtailed Freedom Of Speech And Expression': PM Modi While Addressing Nation Through Mann Ki Baat

In his monthly radio broadcast "Mann Ki Baat" on Sunday (26 November), Prime Minister Narendra Modi indirectly criticised previous governments, referring to the First Amendment to the Constitution as a 'misfortune' due to its impact on curtailing freedom of speech.
He acknowledged that the 44th Amendment had rectified the wrongs committed during the Emergency.
Congratulating the nation on Constitution Day, he highlighted that 106 amendments had been made to the Constitution since its inception in 1950.
PM Modi emphasied the need for a collective effort in nation-building and praised the recent law providing reservation for women in Lok Sabha and assembly elections.
He hailed it as an example of the 'sankalp-shakti' (power of resolve) in democracy.
Discussing the Constitution's salient features, the PM mentioned the significant role played by women, with 15 nominated as members of the Constituent Assembly.
He specifically highlighted Hansa Mehta, who advocated for human rights and justice for women.
Addressing a new trend of conducting weddings abroad, PM Modi encouraged celebrating weddings on Indian soil to keep the money within the country.
He urged people to prioritise buying products made in India, supporting the 'vocal for local' initiative.
The PM estimated a business of around Rs 5 lakh crore during the wedding season, emphasising the importance of shopping for made-in-India products.
In a somber note, PM Modi also mentioned the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, marking it as the most heinous attack faced by India on that day.
