A court in Thane has granted bail to Marathi actor Ketaki Chitale in a case registered against her under Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The case was filed against her after she was arrested over alleged derogatory remarks against the NCP chief Sharad Pawar on a social media post.

The Marathi actor is currently in judicial custody and is facing multiple FIRs in Maharashtra because of her one social media post.

Chitale has been granted bail on a surety amount of Rs 25,000 by the Thane court. However, she will remain in the jail as the actor is accused in another case in which the bail hearing is on 21 June, reports ANI.

She had earlier approached the Bombay High Court seeking a stay on the investigation in these cases.

Chitale (29) was arrested on 14 May and booked under various Indian Penal Code sections for defamation and promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and race.

The film and TV actor was arrested by the Thane police last month over the post she allegedly shared on her Facebook page, which was in verse form and purportedly written by someone else.

It contained phrases like “hell is waiting” and “you hate Brahmins”, allegedly referring to Pawar, whose party shares power in Maharashtra with the Shiv Sena and Congress. PTI SP GK GK

Last week, the Navi Mumbai Police had filed a charge sheet against Chitale under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for her Facebook post, dating back to 2020, against Buddhism, reports Financial Express.
