NDMC's Demolition Drive In Violence-Hit Jahangirpuri: SC Orders Status Quo, To Hear Case Tomorrow

The Supreme Court on Wednesday (20 April) ordered status quo on the ongoing anti-encroachment drive by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) in Delhi's Jahangirpuri area which was rocked by violence on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti.
The matter was mentioned by senior advocate Dushyant Dave before Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana, reports Bar and Bench.
"Unconstitutional, unauthorised demolition is taking place in Jahangirpuri where riots took place. No notice was served so that reply is served in 10 days," Dave said.
"We direct status quo. We will list it tomorrow," the CJI responded.
A public interest litigation petition (PIL) filed by Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind seeking directions to the Central and State governments that no residential accommodation or commercial property be demolished as a punitive measure, was also mentioned before the CJI.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal mentioned the petition filed by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind against the alleged actions taken by authorities in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat against riot-accused.
