'There's Much In A Name': Assam CM Sarma Calls For Changing Names Of Places That Are Contrary To Local Culture And Civilisation

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday (16 February) said that the state government will soon launch a portal to invite suggestions on renaming places across the states.

Asserting that the name of a city, town or village should represent its culture, tradition and civilisation, Sarma said that the state government would invite suggestions thorugh the poral on "change of names across Assam which are contrary to our civilisation, culture and derogatory to any caste or community".

"THERE’S MUCH IN A NAME. Name of a city, town or village should represent its culture, tradition & civilisation. We shall launch a portal to invite suggestions on change of names across Assam which are contrary to our civilisation, culture & derogatory to any caste or community (sic)" the Assam CM said in a tweet.

Sarma, while speaking at a bhumi pujan (ground breaking) ceremony of the second medical college in Guwahati said, “there are some places which people of the locality do not wish to take the name. There are places which are named out of malice in some communities. This has to change," reports Economic Times.
