A family in a residential housing society in Maharashtra’s Thane brought two goats inside a housing complex ahead of the Muslim festival of Bakrid. After residents objected and major ruckus followed, the police intervened.
The incident took place on Monday (26 June) night at Vinay Nagar Society in JP North on Mira Road, Thane. After residents noticed that two goats were brought inside the complex by a family, they staged a protest. Mira Road police then held discussions with the residents. Bakrid is falling on 29 June this year.
Hindustan Times quoted a resident as saying that all societies had decided to not allow goats inside the building, but the family in question violated the rules.
Another resident said that Muslim families had been given a designated space for keeping the goats, but one out of several families observing the festival brought the goat inside the complex.
“They still want to be stubborn and say ‘we will bring goats here, do whatever you want’, that is wrong. We just want everyone to adhere to the rules of the society,” he said, as quoted by HT.
The police told the media that as per Supreme Court rulings, slaughtering inside residential colonies is banned. However, a police officer told the media that the family did not mean to slaughter it inside the home.
Mohsin and his wife have alleged that they were assaulted and abused by residents.
