The Central Water Commission (CWC) has entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with IIT Roorkee for the development of International Centre of Excellence for Dams (ICED).

The Centre will be developed under externally funded Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP) Phase II and Phase III.

The MoA will be valid for either ten years or until the completion of DRIP Phase-II and Phase-III, whichever occurs first, from the date of signing.

The MoA will be valid for either ten years or until the completion of DRIP Phase-II and Phase-III, whichever occurs first, from the date of signing.

The ICED, located in Roorkee, will provide specialised technical assistance to dam owners in India and abroad, including investigations, modeling, research, innovation, and technical support services.

The Centre will focus on specific dam safety areas to address emerging challenges through scientific research and technological innovations.

It will also provide education, technology transfer along with carrying out applied research in dam safety management at local, regional, national, and international levels.

The Centre will work for agreed dam safety areas to support and provide solutions to various emerging challenges faced in dam safety through scientific research and latest technological innovations.

Initially, the Centre will focus on reservoir sedimentation and seismic hazard mapping and analysis, and additional areas will be added as needed due to the implementation of the Dam Safety Act in the near future.

In the long run, the centre aims to address the entire life cycle of dams.
