India Touches 100-Medal Mark For The First Time At Asian Games, PM Modi Hails 'Momentous Achievement'

India achieved a significant milestone on Saturday (8 October) as it reached the 100-medal mark in the Hangzhou Asian Games, marking a historic first for the country.

Prior to this achievement, India had already secured a place in the century of medals on Friday, with a total of 95 medals in their pocket.

The Indian team had already guaranteed additional medals in compound archery (3), kabaddi (2), badminton (1), and men's cricket (1).

On the final day of the Indian athletes' events in Hangzhou, India added four more medals in archery.

Additionally, the women's kabaddi team's victory over Chinese Taipei in the final officially pushed India over the 100-medal mark.

This is the third title triumph for the women's kabaddi team in the continental showpiece. They surpassed their runner-up finish in the previous edition of the Games in Indonesia and have fulfilled the country's expectations of achieving a historic three-figure mark for the first time.

India has now crossed the 100-medal mark, with 25 gold, 35 silver, and 40 bronze medals to its name. There are still a few more medals that are already assured.

Hailing the performance of Indian contingent at the Asian Games, PM Modi said, "A momentous achievement for India at the Asian Games! The people of India are thrilled that we have reached a remarkable milestone of 100 medals. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to our phenomenal athletes whose efforts have led to this historic milestone for India".

"Every awe-inspiring performance has made history and filled our hearts with pride. I look forward to hosting our Asian Games contingent on the 10th and interacting with our athletes," he added.

In the last edition of the Games in Indonesia, India won a total of 70 medals. This included 16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze medals, which was the country's best-ever performance.

India's shooters and track and field athletes also played a significant role in the country's success in Asian Games 2023. They contributed a total of 51 medals, with 22 coming from the shooters and 29 from the track and field athletes.

The Indian contingent achieved remarkable success at the games, with one of the standout moments being the women's table tennis team winning a surprise bronze medal.

Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee displayed incredible skill and defeated the powerful Chinese team in the semifinals.
