Criticising the state government for the flooding and waterlogging in many parts of Chennai, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai today (30 November) in a post on X (formerly Twitter) stated that it has become a routine for the city to get flooded during monsoons and people want to know what happened to the huge amounts of money spent for stormwater drainage works.
"Chennai is one of the most important cities in the world in various fields. But every year, it has become a routine for Chennai to flounder during monsoons. The public is paying a very high price for the mistakes of the Tamil Nadu government.
"The politicians who are in power are of the opinion that it is enough to fold their clothes and walk in the rain, so the situation has not changed even after the change of government.
"The public has started asking the question of what happened to the billions of funds spent by every government on so-called rainwater drainage works. If the authorities work hard and are unable to fully rectify the situation, it means that there is something fundamentally wrong.
"Dilapidated roads and stagnant rainwater all over Chennai have called into question the rainwater drainage works claimed by the Tamil Nadu rulers over the years. How many more rainy seasons do we need for the Tamil Nadu government to learn its lesson?"

According to a report by News9Live in 2022, stormwater drainage and flood control works of Rs 4000 crore were underway in Chennai.
Chief Minister MK Stalin has directed ministers and officials to visit the areas and resolve the issues. He also visited the integrated control centre set up in the Ripon Buildings for the northeast monsoon.
