The Uttar Pradesh government is planning to commence the construction of the new State Assembly building on the birth anniversary of the late former Prime Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, India Today reported.

The forthcoming assembly building will replace the existing structure, which dates back to 1928. The Uttar Pradesh government has disclosed that the new edifice will be built by merging the premises of Lucknow's Darul-shafa and adjacent areas, with an estimated cost of Rs 3,000 crore.

The construction endeavor aims to ensure its completion before 2027, ensuring that at least one session of the current state Assembly convenes within the new establishment.

Officials have emphasised the necessity for this new assembly building, as they anticipate that the current one will not be spacious enough to accommodate the increased number of MLAs following the delimitation process.

Significantly, on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha relocated to the new Parliament building.
