Bill Introduced In US Congress To Make Diwali A Federal Holiday

A US lawmaker has introduced a bill in Congress to make Diwali a federal holiday.
During a virtual news conference after introducing the bill in the House of Representatives, Democratic Congresswoman from New York Grace Meng emphasised the significance of Diwali to billions of people worldwide and communities in Queens, New York, and the US.
The Diwali Day Act would make the festival, which is celebrated by lighting lamps and bursting crackers and fireworks, the 12th federal holiday in the US once passed by Congress and signed by the President.
“Diwali is one of the most important days of the year for billions of people across the globe, and for countless families and communities in Queens, New York, and the United States,” said Congresswoman Meng.
“Diwali celebrations are a wonderful time here in Queens, and each year it is easy to see just how important this day is to so many people. America’s strength is derived from the diverse experiences, cultures and communities that make up this nation. My Diwali Day Act is one step toward educating all Americans on the importance of this day, and celebrating the full face of American diversity. I look forward to shepherding this bill through Congress," she added.
Diwali represents the triumph of good over evil and knowledge over ignorance, a statement by Meng's office said on Friday (26 May).
Establishing a federal holiday for Diwali, and the day off it would provide, would allow families and friends to celebrate together, and demonstrate that the government values the diverse cultural makeup of the nation, the statement said.
The move has been welcomed by Hindu advocacy groups in the US.
“The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) congratulates Representative Grace Meng for introducing this bill and fully supports her efforts to recognise Diwali as a federal holiday,” said Nikunj Trivedi, President of the CoHNA.
“This joyous festival is celebrated by millions of Americans and symbolizes the victory of good over evil and of light over darkness and brings together people from all backgrounds to cherish goodness, well-being, peace and prosperity - things that everyone can value and benefit from. Diwali enriches the cultural tapestry of our great nation and inspires us to pursue the best that life has to offer," Trivedi added.
