China has launched a two-day military exercise around Taiwan as punishment for the swearing-in ceremony of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te.

Lai, in his ceremony held on Monday, pledged to fight for Taiwan's sovereignty. Lai asserted in his speech that both sides are equal and "are not subordinate to each other," which apparently irked China.

Chinese Foreign Ministry official Wang Yi, rubbishing Lai's speech, said, "The ugly acts of Lai Ching-te and others who betray the nation and their ancestors are disgraceful," adding, "all Taiwan independence separatists will be nailed to the pillar of shame in history."

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also accused Lai of promoting formal independence for Taiwan, adding that the new president was more dangerous than his predecessors.

China called these military drills a strong punishment for its opponents who believe in the independence of Taiwan. China considers Taiwan its own territory and repeatedly threatens it with invasion.

Li Xi, spokesperson of the Eastern Theatre Command, said the latest exercises served as "strong punishment" for "Taiwan independence forces", and "a stern warning against the interference and provocation by external forces."

According to reports, the exercise will start in the afternoon and will involve 15 Chinese navy and 16 coast guard ships, along with 42 military aircraft, which will encircle Taiwan. The Chinese hope to practice a blockade of Taiwan in the event of war.
