Israel's President Asks Netanyahu To Form Government

After years of political instability, Israel finally has a stable government. Israel's president has asked former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to form a government. He is already the longest serving prime minister of Israel in the nation's history.

Sunday's step will usher the long-serving leader back to power after a one-year hiatus and with him comes what's expected to be the country's most right-wing coalition ever.

"We will do everything to make this, with God's help, a stable government, a successful government, a responsible government, a dedicated government that will work for the benefit of all residents of the state of Israel, without exception," Benjamin Netanyahu said.

With his allies keen on gaining power and ending the outgoing coalition's rule as soon as possible, Netanyahu will likely try to quickly wrap up negotiations.

According to reports, allotment of key portfolios, including the finance and defence ministries, might prove tricky as Netanyahu's coalition partners could attempt to drag out the negotiations to achieve their desired portfolio.

Elections earlier this month indicated a clear win for Likud, the party which Netanyahu belongs to and his ultra-Orthodox allies.

The vote also ended the short-lived, ideologically-diverse government that had ousted Netanyahu last year after his 12 consecutive years in power. The internal contradictions of the coalition ensured that the coalition does not complete its term.

Netanyahu has six weeks to conclude negotiations and form a government.
