Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Russian President Vladimir Putin
Commending Prime Minister Narendra Modi for resolutely safeguarding India's national interests without succumbing to intimidation, Russian President Vladimir Putin has attributed the strengthening ties between the two nations to the policy pursued by the Indian prime minister.
Putin made these remarks during the "Russia Calling! Investment Forum" held in Moscow on 7 and 8 December.
The Russian President expressed confidence in Modi's unwavering commitment to India's interests, emphasising that he cannot envision Modi being coerced or frightened into actions contrary to the nation's welfare.
Despite external pressures, Putin noted the robust development of relations across various sectors between Russia and India.
While acknowledging that they haven't directly discussed external pressures on Modi, Putin observed the Prime Minister's resolute stance in defending India's state interests, even amid criticism from Western countries for India's independent course in the face of sanctions against Russia.
“I just look at what is happening from the outside, and sometimes, frankly speaking, I am even surprised at his tough stance on defending the national interests of the Indian state,” the Russian president said.
Notably, India has faced scrutiny for continuing its import of discounted Russian crude oil despite Western sanctions imposed on Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine.
