In a major boost to Make in India, Apple Inc is set to establish its global lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery cell supplier, TDK Corporation, in India.
According to a report from Business Standard, the prominent Japanese electronic component and device manufacturer will produce battery cells within India, specifically to power iPhones manufactured in the country.
The produced cells will be provided to Apple's Li-ion battery assembler, Sunwoda Electronics, which is already operational in India but currently relies on imported cells from various global markets.
TDK, which acquired Hong Kong-based Li-ion battery and cell maker Amperex Technology Ltd in 2005, has recently acquired 180 acres of land in Haryana.
The purpose of this acquisition is to establish a manufacturing unit for various components, including cells for Li-ion batteries.
The commencement of commercial production, aimed at supplying cells to Apple, is anticipated in the near future.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
