Chennai Egmore Railway Station To Be Redeveloped As Multi-modal Transport Hub With World-Class Amenities At A Cost Of Rs 760 crores

  • With futuristic world-class amenities promising to meet the requirements of the next 40 years, Chennai Egmore station will be redeveloped at an estimated cost of Rs 760 crores.

    To handle the burgeoning passenger traffic, the existing infrastructure and passenger amenities at Chennai Egmore will be revamped, keeping abreast of the times. The railhead will serve as a multi-modal transport hub for suburban rail, Metro and MRTS, besides being entirely divyang-friendly.

    The station currently handles about 35 mainline trains and 240 suburban trains, and approximately 24,129 passengers daily. The station's total passenger earnings per year during 2020-2021 was Rs 125 cr.

    Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, who visited Chennai Egmore during the night hours on Thursday (May 19) and inspected the facilities at the station and reviewed the Master plan of the redevelopment project, said that the station would be redeveloped duly maintaining the heritage and simultaneously revamping its amenities at par with world-class standards.

    The Minister discussed in detail the proposed redevelopment plans for Chennai Egmore and the facilitation of inter-modal connectivity.

    He said, "Prime Minister has the vision of transforming Indian Railways as he believes that transformation of the Indian Railway will pave the way for transformation of the Indian Economy. Redevelopment of various categories of stations is part of that vision".

    He further said the station would become the hub of economic activity post station redevelopment.

    The proposed Chennai Egmore Station Redevelopment Project plan includes

    1. Seamless movement of passengers by separate arrival and departure corridors, aesthetically designed stations with facade lighting arrangements, better landscaping efforts,

    2. Dedicated parking lots for streamlined movement of different category vehicles and pedestrians in exclusive lanes.

    3. Efficient water and energy management measures and clear cut division of train operation facilities and passenger amenities.

    The Minister stated that five stations - Chennai Egmore, Madurai, Katpadi, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu would be redeveloped in the first phas
