The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has received its first metropolis metro trainset equipped with driverless technology under 'Make in India'. This marks the first time the DMRC has outsourced a project to an original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

The first batch of trains for this expansion phase has been dispatched from Alstom's facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, where they were designed under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

These state-of-the-art trainsets are integrated with Grade of Automation (GOA) 4 driverless technology, allowing them to operate safely at speeds of up to 95 kmph, with an operational speed of 85 kmph. The new trains will serve three lines of the Delhi Metro, including two extensions and the newly developed Gold Line 10, covering a total of 64.67 km.

Valued at 312 million euros, this project is not only focused on expanding the metro network but also includes 15 years of maintenance, making it the first DMRC project of this kind to be outsourced to an OEM.

The order for 52 trainsets, each consisting of six cars, was awarded in November 2022 as part of the efforts to operationalise the Phase 4 expansion, as per Financial Express report. With the first driverless train now ready for operation, the project is being celebrated as a key achievement in India's infrastructure and self-reliance initiatives.

Alstom’s Managing Director, Olivier Loison, emphasised the positive impact the new trains will have on Delhi's urban development. "These trainsets will play a pivotal role in improving the quality of life for citizens and driving the city's development," he said, adding that the project reinforces the long-standing partnership between Alstom and DMRC.
