Gurugram Metro: CM Announces Construction Work On 28-Km Metro Network To Commence In A Month

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is set to begin civil work on the 28 km Gurugram Metro from Huda City Centre within a month.

Haryana chief minister, Manohar Lal Khattar, made the announcement during a review of development projects worth Rs 37,927 crore across the state, including various key initiatives in Gurugram and Faridabad.

The chief minister highlighted the significant changes brought about by development projects and mentioned that more than Rs 2,000 crore has been designated for development endeavours in Gurugram and Faridabad.

He additionally directed officials to accelerate the construction of ongoing projects and ensure consistent supervision, as per an official statement from the state government, reports Hindustan Times.

Khattar said, “The government is committed to strengthening the metro rail and road network to establish a robust transportation system in Gurugram and Faridabad. To achieve that, GMDA will commence civil work on a 28 km Metro rail network in Gurugram within a month”.

He further highlighted the accelerated progress on the Metro connectivity between Rezang La Chowk and Sector-21 in Dwarka, as well as the regional rapid rail links from Delhi to Behrore and Delhi to Panipat.

The upcoming Gurugram Metro

The proposed 28.8 km-long corridor, known as ‘Gurugram Metro’ project — will run between Huda City Centre and Cyber City via Old Gurgaon.

The corridor is expected to have 27 elevated stations, including a spur between Basai and the Dwarka expressway.

The estimated total cost is Rs 6,800 crore, according to the chief minister.

The tender mentions a 26.65 km main line between Huda City Centre and CyberHub via Subash Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, and Palam Vihar, and a 1.85 km spur from Basai village to Dwarka Expressway.

The project is proposed to have an interchange with Rapid Metro.

Additionally, a Metro link from Palam Vihar to Dwarka Sector 21 has been proposed by the state government to connect the Gurugram Metro and the Blue Line of Delhi Metro in Dwarka.

In October 2022, the Haryana Cabinet granted approval for the final Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the metro extension.

As outlined in the DPR, the proposed spur metro will span a distance of 8.4 km.

Specifically, 4 km of the metro line will connect Palam Vihar to Sector-111 in Gurugram, while the remaining 4.4 km will link Sector-111 to Sector-21 Dwarka.

For almost five years, the progress of the Gurugram Metro rail project was halted due to multiple revisions in its plans.

Currently, the project has obtained approval from the Public Investment Board of the central government, but the final authorisation from the Union cabinet is still pending.

During the Budget presentation in February of this year, Chief Minister Khattar announced that the Gurugram metro project would initiate work in the current financial year, as it is expected to receive approval from the Union cabinet in the near future.

Furthermore, during the review meeting, the CM addressed several other significant infrastructure projects.

These included the establishment of two 100MLD water treatment plants in Dhanwapur and Chandu Budhera.

Furthermore, he highlighted the development of the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) in Gurugram — spanning from Faridabad Road to NH-48 — with an estimated cost of approximately Rs 845.54 crore

The chief minister delivered an update on several projects which included renovation of the western Jamuna Canal in Yamunanagar, construction of a concrete link connecting Munak head to Khubdu in Karnal, restructuring of the Gurugram water service channel, and the development of the Gorakhpur water conveyance system in Fatehabad and Jhajjar.
