Gurugram’s Rapid Metro Rail has reported significant growth in both ridership and revenue for the first quarter of the 2024-25 financial year.

Haryana Chief Secretary, TVS N Prasad, in the meeting of the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation Limited, stated that the metro recorded a 10.49 per cent increase in revenue, amounting to Rs 8.11 crore for the first quarter, with the ridership rising by 8.75 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The number of passengers using the Rapid Metro network grew steadily, with 12.20 lakh passengers in April, 13.48 lakh in May, and 12.30 lakh in June 2024.

The Rapid Metro was constructed by IL&FS Infrastructure for Rs 1,450 crore over three years. It was opened to the public in November 2013.

However, it initially struggled with low ridership and high costs, primarily due to the alignment of the corridor and the lack of further connectivity, which nearly led to its demise.

Since 2019, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has operated and maintained the Rapid Metro.

With the ridership and revenue gradually increasing, there is confidence that this trend will further continue, supported by the future metro expansion plans currently underway in the city.

The Gurugram metro extension project, approved by the Union Cabinet on June 7, 2023, involves extending the metro line from Millennium City Centre Metro station to Cyber City.

This project, spanning 28.5 km, will connect Millennium City Centre to Udyog Vihar Phase-5 and integrate with the existing Rapid Metro Rail Gurugram network near Cyber City.

The new metro network for Gurugram will be key to increasing metro usage by bringing a larger area of Gurugram under the metro transit network.
