NHAI To Launch First Multi-Lane Free Flow Toll System, Invites Partnerships For Bank-Led Toll Collection On Dwarka Expressway

As part of ongoing efforts to remove physical toll plazas nationwide, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is inviting banks to participate in the country’s first multi-lane free flow (MLFF) toll collection system.

With this system, for the first time, NHAI will be looking to partner with a bank to handle toll collection on highways, making a major shift in India’s tolling strategy.

This new system will use field equipment and sensors to capture data from vehicles as they pass. The collected information will then be sent to an electronic toll payment system for automatic fee deduction, as per an Economic Times report.

The system will collect vehicle data and send it to the partnering bank, which will then deduct the toll fee from the vehicle's FastTag wallet.

If a toll remains unpaid, it will be displayed on the vehicle’s portal and app.

The trial phase of this tolling system will take place on the Dwarka Expressway. If successful, the single toll plaza on the 28-km expressway will be removed, with toll fees deducted directly based on vehicle data.

In addition, NHAI is planning to install the MLFF system on more expressways across the country.

To enhance transit experience and toll systems further, the government will use GIS-based software to monitor around 100 toll plazas for smooth traffic flow.

Live monitoring of toll plazas will aim to ensure free traffic flow and a more convenient tolling process on national highways.

These locations have been selected based on congestion feedback received through the National Highway helpline (1033), as per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
