Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Navi Mumbai International Airport and the final phase of Metro-3, along with important stretches of Mumbai’s metro expansion, on 8 and 9 October, Indian Express reported.
Earlier reports indicated 30 September as the inauguration date, but it has now been officially set for the second week of October, aligning with PM Modi’s visit to Mumbai for the International Fintech Festival.
Once the last section of Metro-3 is inaugurated, the 33.5 km Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ corridor will be completely operational.
PM Modi had earlier inaugurated the first phase between Aarey and BKC in October 2024, and the second phase from BKC to Acharya Atre Road in May 2025.
On 8 October, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the last section of the line, from Acharya Atre Road to Cuffe Parade, bringing the entire Metro-3 corridor into service.
Alongside Metro-3, PM Modi will inaugurate the initial phase of Metro Line-2B, linking Mandale to Chembur (Diamond Garden), enhancing east-west connectivity in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state government has formally proposed naming the Navi Mumbai International Airport after social activist D B Patil, a suggestion that has been positively received by the Centre.
He also requested that 58 acres of land in Dahisar (East), currently with the Airports Authority of India, be handed over to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The land, earlier earmarked for a metro car shed, has not been used because of an HF Receiving Station situated there.
Fadnavis stated that transferring the land to the BMC would enable its use for public amenities and urban growth, while also resolving height-related restrictions.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport project is a greenfield development led by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. (74 per cent) and CIDCO (26 per cent) under Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd.
The first phase will handle around 20 million passengers a year and 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo, with future expansions targeting 90 million passengers and 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo.
Air India Group has confirmed it will begin operations from NMIA through Air India Express, offering 20 daily departures to 15 cities in Phase 1.
By mid-2026, the airline plans to expand to 55 daily departures, including international routes, and increase further to 60 daily flights by the winter of 2026.
