Mumbai's eagerly-awaited underground metro line, the Aqua Line, is scheduled to begin operations after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates phase 1 of the project on 5 October (Saturday).

The first phase of the Metro-3 corridor will run from Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Aarey (Jogeshwari-Vikhroli link road), connecting the city’s western suburbs and covering key high-traffic areas.

Although this initial stretch is only 12 kilometres (km) long, transport experts believe it will have a significant impact on travel patterns in Mumbai and will provide vital links between BKC and other important localities.

The overall corridor spans 33.5 km along the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ corridor, with 27 stations in total, 26 of which are underground, and one at grade level.

Part of a larger 14-line metro network, this corridor will be the only one connecting the southernmost parts of Mumbai.

Recognised as one of the most intricate underground projects, Line 3 faced various challenges, making it one of the city’s most technically demanding infrastructure projects.

Once fully operational, with the completion of phase-2, the line is expected to accommodate nearly 12 lakh passengers daily, expanding connectivity to southern, central, and western Mumbai.

Further, during his visit, PM Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation for several development projects in Thane, totalling over Rs 32,800 crore.

This includes the Rs 12,200 crore Thane Integral Ring Metro Rail, featuring 20 elevated and two underground stations, and the Rs 3,310 crore Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension to enhance connectivity with South Mumbai.

He will also initiate phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) project, which includes essential roads and bridges.
