These high horse power locomotives will be the future workhorse for freight operation on Indian Railways.

Siemens will manufacture these locomotives at Dahod in Gujarat and maintain these locomotives at four maintenance depots - Kharagpur, Visakhapatnam, Raipur and Pune.

Indian Railways has issued the Letter of Award (LoA) for manufacturing and maintenance of 1,200 high horsepower (9000 HP) electric locomotives over a period of 11 years to Siemens.

The estimated value of the contract is about Rs 26,000 crore (about 3.2 billion USD), it includes maintenance of these locomotives for 35 years.

Agreement with Siemens India will be signed within 30 days of issue of LoA and the proto-type locomotives are to be delivered in the coming two years.

Dahod unit in Gujarat, for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April laid the foundation stone, will be fully constructed for manufacturing these locomotives within a period of two years.

Siemens, selected as technological partner, will manufacture these locomotives at Dahod and maintain these locomotives at four maintenance depots - Kharagpur (West Bengal), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Raipur (Chhattisgarh) and Pune (Maharashtra).

Indian Railways had floated the tender for manufacturing and maintenance of 9,000 HP electric locomotives at Dahod in April this year.

Railways is upgrading its electric locomotives from 6000HP to 9000HP as part of its rail electrification initiative. These high HorsePower (9000 HP) locomotives will be the future workhorse for freight operation on Indian Railways.

The 1,200 locomotives will be manufactured at Dahod facility in 11 years from 2023-24 to 2033-34. The successful bidder will supply five locomotives in the first year and 35 in the second year. As many as 80 locomotives will be supplied per annum in the third and fourth years.

The production will be increased to 100 locomotives per annum in the fifth and the sixth year. Thereafter 160 locomotives will be manufactured per annum for five years till 2033-34.

9000 HP, 6 axle Co-Co Locomotive will be utilized all over Indian Railways Route for hauling 4,500 tonnes load with average speed of 75 km per hour while the maximum speed of these locomotives will be up to 120 km per hour.

Indian Railway expects delivery of the first locomotive from Dahod facility in early 2024. The locomotive will be manufactured using green energy and will have a green manufacturing tag.
