Rural Housing In UP: Nearly 36 Lakh Homes Built Under PMAY-G Since 2016; Tribal Families Among Key Beneficiaries

Since 2016-17, a total of 35.88 lakh houses have been built in Uttar Pradesh under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), reports Hindustan Times.

Launched in 2016, PMAY-G aims to help eligible rural households build pucca houses with basic amenities.

Still 72,000 houses are under construction, aiming for a total of 36.6 lakh houses built by 2024-25, as stated at a state-level monitoring committee meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh.

Officials also reported that approximately 27,000 houses remain incomplete as of 2023-24. Model houses have been completed in 410 development blocks, with construction underway in 144 more.

Under the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana-Gramin, between 2018-19 and 2023-24, 2.52 lakh houses have been built out of the target of 2.57 lakh, with 3,929 still under construction.

The scheme has particularly benefitted marginalised communities — including 47,795 houses for Musahar families, 4,838 for Van Tangiya, 3,233 for Tharu, 29,923 for Kol, 6,979 for Sahariya, 5,367 for Chero, 2,220 for Nat, 63 for Pachaia Lohar, and 155 for Gadhiya Lohar.

Additionally, the Baiga and Bhoksa tribal communities of Uttar Pradesh were provided with 1,584 and 175 homes, respectively, for their families.

Further, 5,021 houses were allocated to families affected by leprosy, 78,101 to those impacted by natural disasters, 249 to families affected by Kala-azar, 674 by Japanese encephalitis and acute encephalitis syndrome, and 71,056 to differently-abled individuals.

In February this year, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the extension of PMAY-G for an additional five years, with a goal to construct 20 million more houses.
