Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has unveiled plans to develop a new international airport in Hosur.

Announcing the ambitious project during a legislative assembly session on 27 June, Stalin revealed that the proposed airport will span across 2,000 acres and have the capacity to handle up to 30 million passengers annually.

Hosur is close to Bengaluru and is home to more than 500,000 people and around 3,500 industries, including both small and medium-sized enterprises and major companies such as Ashok Leyland, TVS, and Titan.

Many homegrown EV companies like Ather, Ola Electric, and Simple Energy have already set up manufacturing units in the Hosur-Krishnagiri-Dharmapuri region.

"The establishment of an international airport in Hosur is a transformative initiative for our state," Stalin stated, highlighting its potential to bolster connectivity and drive economic growth across the region.

Tamil Nadu Industries Minister T R B Rajaa echoed these sentiments, emphasising Hosur's strategic location near Bengaluru, as well as its thriving industrial ecosystem, which includes prominent sectors like automotive and electric vehicles (EV), advanced manufacturing, logistics, and IT.

Rajaa further emphasised Hosur's existing infrastructure advantages and its role as a hub for major companies like Rolls-Royce (IAMPL), highlighting its growing prominence in industrial and technological sectors, reports businessline.

"With Hosur's excellent weather and strategic location, the new airport will foster a twin-city ecosystem with Bengaluru, propelling growth in both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka," Rajaa added.

This project is projected to benefit not only Hosur but also neighbouring districts such as Dharmapuri and Salem.

Bengaluru-Hosur Metro

The state governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are also planning a metro corridor between Hosur and Bommasandra (Bengaluru), which could potentially become south India's first interstate metro.

The proposed Bommasandra-Hosur Metro corridor spans a total distance of 20.5 km, with 11.7 km falling in Karnataka and the remaining 8.8 km in Tamil Nadu.
