  • In a significant move towards strengthening Indo-Russian cooperation in the rail sector, Kinet Railway Solutions has commenced operations at the Marathwada Rail Coach Factory (MRCF) of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL).

A leading manufacturer of electric passenger trains in India, Kinet is a joint venture between Indian Railways and a Russian major.

The joint venture (JV) won the contract to manufacture 1,920 sleeper coaches and maintain them for 35 years.

The commencement of operations by Kinet represents a significant milestone in the ongoing modernisation of India's railway network. Preparations at the Marathwada Rail Coach Factory will pave the way for mass production of Vande Bharat sleeper coaches.

Kinet managing director Sathyamurthy K, said: "This plant is more than just a manufacturing facility. It is a catalyst for socio-economic development in the region. More than 10,000 people will be involved in the entire production chain. By creating employment, supporting ancillary industries, and promoting skill development, we contribute to the broader vision of 'Viksit Bharat @2047' – a developed India by the centenary of our Independence".

The project involves upgrading existing government manufacturing facilities and depots to meet global production and maintenance standards.

"This is a huge project that will generate employment opportunities for the region," said Kinet chief executive officer Alexandra Meluzova.

Located at Latur in Maharashtra, the Marathwada Rail Coach Factory is spread across 351 acres.

The facility has 11 advanced assembly stations and will have various specialised workshops including a car body shop, warehouse, assembly, testing, bogie, and paint shops. The internal tracks will be 8.6 km long.

The factory is equipped with a solar power plant and a wastewater treatment plant, helping to reduce its carbon footprint. In addition, more than 1,000 trees will be planted on the site by the end of next year.

According to the railways officials, a final agreement will be signed between Kinet and Indian Railways since there are some minor changes in the configuration of the Vande Bharat sleeper train.

Earlier it was a 16-coach train, but now it has been decided to make it a 24-coach sleeper Vande Bharat train.

Kinet's operations are expected to create significant employment opportunities, drive socio-economic development in the pocket, and stimulate ancillary industries.
