Adani Enterprises has signed a joint venture with leading data-centre operator EdgeConneX to develop 1 Gigawatt (GW) of data centre capacity in India over the next 10 years.

This joint venture will focus on building a network of hyperscale data centres in India, starting with Chennai, Navi Mumbai, Noida, Vizag and Hyderabad. Development and construction at these sites has already started.

The 50:50 joint venture will develop and operate data centres throughout India, leveraging the complementary expertise and capabilities of the two partners over the next decade to build India's leading green data centre platform, says a company release.

This development assumes significance at a time when the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued data localisation norms which mandate Payment System Operators (PSOs) to ensure the entire data relating to payment systems operated by them is stored within India.

This requires the presence of large data centres in India which will provides the necessary infrastructure to house computing and networking equipment to collect, store, process, distribute or allowing access to large amounts of data.

The centre is also planning to introduce a data centre policy to incentivise the setting up of data centre parks across India.
