Kakinada Gateway port (KGPL) has inked an agreement with Andhra Pradesh government to develop greenfield commercial port in Kona village of Godavari district to facilitate Kakinada SEZ.

The port is to be built by GMR Infrastructure on design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) basis. The port will cover an area of 1,811 acres owned by KSEZ as reported by Press Trust of India.

The port is expected to generate employment for 3,000 people in a period of one to three years with an investment of Rs 2,123 crore, said the filing. The Kakinada SEZ industrial park is at an advantage as it is located on Vizag-Chennai Industrial corridor and has around 8,521 acres of industrial land along with the planned 1,811-acre greenfield commercial port.

Companies are queuing up to set up plants in the Kakinada SEZ as it is blessed with surplus water and power and assured supply of gas by Andhra Pradesh Gas Distribution Corporation. The industrial park at Kakinada will be the first to get piped natural gas supply in the whole of the eastern coast.
