Another One For The History Books: P V Sindhu Becomes First Indian To Win Gold At The BWF World Tour Finals

India’s ace Badminton player, P V Sindhu on Sunday (16 December) became the first Indian to win gold at the BWF World Tour Finals by defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara, Press Trust of India has reported.

Sindhu defeated Okuhara 21-19, 21-17 in straight sets of the tournament which pits the eight best ranked players on the planet against each other. Prior to this, Saina Nehwal had reached the finals of the 2011 World Super Series Finals, and Jwala Gutta/V Diju challenged the final in 2009, reports The New Indian Express.

This victory also meant that Sindhu broke her finals jinx. She had earlier lost her last seven consecutive tournament finals.

After the Korea Open in September 2017, Sindhu reached the finals of Hong Kong Open, BWF World Tour Finals, India Open, Commonwealth Games, Thailand Open, World Championships and Asian Games yet turned out with a silver medal each time.

This tournament also saw Sindhu beating World number 1 Tai Tzu Ying to end her six-match losing streak against the Chinese Taipei shuttler.

Playing her third consecutive season-finishing tournament and second final in a row, Sindhu let out tears of joy when she ferociously hit a smash to seal the game. A year ago, Sindhu was beaten by another Japanese shuttler in Akane Yamaguchi – who she beat in the round robin this year.
