An arrest warrant was issued against Congress leader Shashi Tharoor by a Kolkata court on Tuesday (13 August) for making a statement predicting the formation of a “Hindu Pakistan” if BJP was reelected to power following the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, ANI has reported.
The arrest warrant was issued by a Kolkata magistrate court following a petition by lawyer Sumeet Chowdhury.
Tharoor while addressing a public rally in Thiruvananthapuram had alleged that the BJP would rewrite the constitution and pave the way for the formation of “Hindu Pakistan” if voted to power for a second time.
He added that the BJP would “tear apart the Indian constitution and write a new one” and the democratic constitution as we know it won’t survive. Tharoor alleged that under the new constitution, principles of Hindu Rashtra and Hindu Pakistan would be enshrined which will not treat minorities as equal.
In his petition Chowdhury claimed that Tharoor’s statement was a “deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings”. Tharoor has reportedly refused to apologise for his remarks.
