Battle For ‘Cleanest City’ Hots Up: Indore Becomes First In Country To Ask For Seven-Star Rating 

Indore has added another feather to its cap by bagging the award for the cleanest city in India for the second year running. The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has requested the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to give the city a seven-star rating in the sanitation survey of Swachh Survekshan, 2019.

Madhya Pradesh’s Indore city has become the first city in the country to make such a claim. A team representing the Union Ministry is set to visit the city anytime after 22 December 2018, to conduct the survey. The survey is expected to be conducted for four-five days, reports The Financial Express.

The IMC has started preparations in anticipation of the survey. If Indore is conferred with a seven-star rating, then 1,000 points will be awarded to the city out of the 5,000 point sanitation survey. Indore has already received 250 points after acquiring the double-plus open-defecation free (ODF) certificate. The city would gain a combined total of 1,250 points with the seven-star rating.

The Union Ministry will rate cities on a scale of seven stars based on multiple cleanliness indicators such as those for solid waste management, under the star rating survey initiative. Some indicators taken into consideration include bulk generator compliance, source segregation, door-to-door collection, construction and demolition management and plastic waste management.

The rating system has been designed in a manner which enables cities to evolve into model cities, with improvements in their overall cleanliness and sanitation.
