Believe It Or Not: The Congress Is Actually Going To Have An Election Process To Promote Rahul Gandhi As Chief

Off-late, the Congress seems to have come to terms with the power social media holds over today’s politics. The Congress Twitter handle, today sent out a tweet about internal elections in the party for the post of the Party President, signalling the day current Party Vice-President Rahul Gandhi will take over as Party President.

The date for polls though, has been marked as “if necessary”, pointing to the sad state of the Congress. The Congress in it’s present state, lacks any national level leaders outside the Gandhi family capable of challenging Rahul for the role, so the results of the “election” are anybody’s guess. The Congress has been deferring Rahul Gandhi’s taking over of the reigns of Congress from mother Sonia Gandhi since some time, trying to paint him as a reluctant monarch pushing for “internal democracy”.

Rahul Gandhi’s continuous electoral debacles, including reducing Congress to the lowest tally ever in the parliament in history of the country, however, haven’t stopped the party from handing him the Party President role. The “elections” are largely seen as a formality, with Rahul already having the endorsement from most remaining Congress leaders across time.

Notably, the results for the “election” - if it’s ever happens - are scheduled for 19 December, a day after Gujarat state election results. Earlier trends indicated that Rahul would be elevated to the Party President post before the results, which might still happen if the post remains uncontested. However, one cannot rule out a dummy candidate to absolve Rahul of the blame, in the case of, and what seems likely, a Congress rout in Gujarat.

Twitterati are however, having a field day over Congress’s decision to hold internal elections before Rahul’s elevation to Party President.
