The Purulia district witnessed chilling cases of political violence against BJP workers.
In last year's panchayat elections in the state, which witnessed intense violence, 20-year-old Trilochan Mahato's death in Purulia was followed by the death of another worker, Dulal Kumar.
In April a 22-year-old BJP worker, Sisupal Sahis, was found hanging from a tree in West Bengal's Purulia district. He was a member of the BJP Youth Morcha and his father is a deputy pradhan of the Sirkabad gram panchayat.
The Purulia electorate though did not forget these incidents and voted for the BJP in record numbers. As per the Election Commission data, BJP’s Jyotirmay Singh Mahato is leading the seat by almost 1.7 lakh votes. The second placed candidate is Trinamool’s Mriganka Mahato. The BJP candidate has garnered 49.1 per cent vote in this seat.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
