In a possible case of religious bigotry, an 18-year-old Muslim girl was tied to a tree and thrashed by her family members for loving a Hindu boy, India Today has reported.
According to the report, this punishment was a result of a diktat issued by the village panchayat. The incident happened on Wednesday (3 October) in the Jogiya Maran village falling under the Rajauli police station.
It has been reported that the girl fell in love with a Hindu boy from a nearby village and the duo wanted to get married. The girl’s family though was against the union. As a result, the girl left her home on 30 September to live with the boy which sparked a manhunt,
After the family found out about her whereabouts, they brought her back and convened a panchayat which ruled that the girl be punished by her family for dishonouring her village.
As a result, she was tied to a three for about five hours and thrashed. The girl’s father Mohammad Farid Ansari was quoted as saying that, “She was tied because she is a criminal. She wants to go with a man from another religion”.
The police was soon called but the report claimed that after recording the girl’s statement they let off the accused with a warning.
