Presenting the Union Budget 2019-20, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the surcharge on earnings of those individuals whose taxable income is in the brackets of Rs 2-5 crore and above Rs 5 crore would be increased.
This would done in such a manner that the effective tax rate on the two categories goes up by three per cent and seven percent respectively.
Interestingly, tax rates for almost all other categories have largely remained unchanged in this Budget, with those earning below Rs 5 lakh being exempted from income tax altogether.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
