Calling Them Martyrs, SGPC Organises 'Shaheedi Samagam' Of The Killers Of Former PM Indira Gandhi In A Gurdwara Inside Golden Temple Complex

A 'Shaheedi Samagam' was organized by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and other Sikh organizations to mark the death anniversary of Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh, the assassins of former PM Indira Gandhi, at Gurdwara Jhanda Bunga Sahib in the Golden Temple complex, The Tribune reported.

Describing Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh as 'martyrs', a bhog of Akhand Path was organised as part of the event. It was followed by gurbani kirtan by hazoori ragi Bhai Simarpreet Singh and ardas by Bhai Sultan Singh. Hukamnama (edict) was recited by Giani Gurminder Singh.

During the function, Satwant Singh’s brother Waryam Singh was presented with a siropa (robe of honour) by Gurminder Singh in presence of community leaders and SGPC general secretary Advocate Bhagwant Singh Sialka and former Akal Takht Sahib jathedar Jasbir Singh Rode.

Former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was shot dead by Beant Singh and Satwant Singh on October 31, 1984.

While one of the assasin Beant Singh was killed on the spot, Satwant Singh & Kehar Singh (who was convicted for masterminding this assassination) were hanged to death on January 6, 1989.
