In a letter dated 15 March University Grant Commission, the UGC has intimated that it will now recognise Chartered Accountant (CA), Company Secretary (CS), Cost and Works Accountant (ICWA) equivalent to Post-graduate degree.
The commission arrived at this decision, based on experts recommendation in its 550th meeting held on 18 February.
Earlier, the Institute of Chartered Accountant (ICAI), the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and the Institute of Cost Works Accountant of India (ICWA) had requested UGC, to consider the certificate courses provided by them to be considered as Postgraduate degree equivalent.
Having the postgraduate status will allow the qualification holders to pursue PhD programme and research work, which they were not able to prior to this recognition.
ICSI has welcomed the move, and other institutes and the students, qualification holders alike.
In their tweet, ICSI said, “UGC recognises Company Secretary Qualification as equivalent to PG Degree based on representations submitted by ICSI. This will leverage the CS Profession across the globe. ICSI is thankful to UGC for acceding to its request.”

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
