As part of phase-2 of Chennai Metro, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has floated tenders to procure 70 driverless train sets of three cars each.

As per the tender notice, the duration of the contract is 1850 days + 730 days (DNP). While the date of the pre-bid meeting is 9 September, the technical bid will open on 23 November.

The scope of work includes design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning of standard gauge Metro rolling stock, reports Metrorail news.

A three coach train set will have the capacity to carry 980 passengers at a time and operates at a top speed of 90 km per hour.

Rs 63,240 crore was announced by Finance Minister (FM) Nirmala Sitharaman for the 118 km long Chennai Metro phase II in her budget speech in February this year.

The CMRL undertook a host of cost-cutting initiatives that reduced the total price of the phase-II project from Rs 89,000 crore to Rs 61,843 crore.

Phase-2 consists of three lines, namely Line-3 from Madhavaram to Siruseri (45.81 km with 48 stations), Line-4 from Light House to Poonamallee (26.1 km, 28 stations) and Line-5 fromMadhavaram to Sholinganallur (47 km, 46 stations).

An underground metro rail package is included in Corridor-III of the Phase-II Metro Rail Project.

Larsen and Toubro (L&T) plans to complete the 12 km-long underground stretches from Kellys Station to Taramani Road junction of the Chennai Metro Rail in the coming 52 months.

Also, L&T has secured the order to construct around 8 km of elevated viaduct and nine elevated metro stations right from Power House to Porur Junction.
