In an alarming development, China has completed building a strategic highway close to the Arunachal Pradesh border, reports Economic Times.
The said highway has been constructed by China through the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon which is known as the world’s deepest gorge with a maximum depth of 6009 metres. The highway has been constructed at a cost of $310 million.
The 67.22-kilometre-long highway connects Pad Township in the Chinese city of Nyingchi with the Baibung Township in Medog County, cutting the travel time between the two by eight hours.
The highway also includes a 2.15-kilometre-long tunnel. The construction of the highway had begun back in 2014. The altitude difference between the highest and the lowest spots of the highway is as high as 2,892 metres.
It should be noted that Medog is the last county in Tibet and is located close to Arunachal Pradesh. This also gains significance as China illegitimately claims Arunachal Pradesh to be a part of its own territory. However, India strongly rejects any Chinese claims over Arunachal.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
