As a counter to the ‘Mother of All Bombs’ (MOAB), which is the strongest non-nuclear weapon in the US arsenal, China has now developed and tested an extremely powerful explosive device along similar lines, reports The Tribune.

The weapon has been produced by Chinese defence manufacturer NORINCO and will be China’s strongest non-nuclear explosive, carrying immense destructive potential.

NORINCO released a promotion video on its official website showcasing a test in which an H-6K bomber airdropped the weapon, leading to a huge explosion. The Chinese weapon, weighing a few tonnes, is also smaller and lighter as compared to the US MOAB.

Chinese defence analyst, Wei Dongxu, estimated the bomb’s length to be about five to six metres, looking at the promotional clip.

“The massive blast can easily and completely wipe out fortified ground targets such as reinforced buildings, bastions and defence shelters,” Wei noted.

He added that weapon could also be used to create a clear landing zone for soldiers coming down from helicopters in scenarios where the area has obstacles like forests.

Pointing to the weapon’s advantage over the US made MOAB, Wei stated, “The US bomb is so large that it has to be carried by a larger transport aircraft rather than a bomber.” Wei said, reasoning that a bomber is faster and more adept at targeting transport aircraft.

Previously, Russia had similarly developed an explosive device of a considerable magnitude called the ‘Father of All Bombs’ which is said to be even more destructive than the MOAB.
