The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has told the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) not to wash its trains using water pumped out using borewells that were not authorised, reports PTI. The court said that the corporation could only use water from borewells that had permission to operate after it was told that the DMRC had permission only for 164 borewells but was operating 276 borewells.

The bench directed the DMRC to seek permission from the Central Ground Water Authority to use water from borewells. The petition was filed after an enquiry under the Right to Information (RTI) Act said that DMRC met its water requirements using water from borewells as well as water supplied by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB).

Groundwater after treatment as per requirement is used for train washing... Borewells have been provided in the depots from where water is sourced. Around 400 to 500 litres of groundwater is used for washing one metro train. The water, after washing of metro train, is sent to Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP). The treated water is then used for gardening and the excess sent to drains.
DMRC’s reply to the RTI

A second RTI reply made to the DJB said that it had not granted any permission to the DMRC for borewells.
