The Union Government is set to announce concessions for students and senior citizens in the token fares for travelling on the Delhi Metro network by deploying a technology-backed system to facilitate it, reports Economic Times.
This announcement was made by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri. He asserted that the centre backs need-based targeted concessions and stands against the misuse of the services and facility.
While addressing Arvind Kejriwal led Delhi government's proposal to provide free travel in Metro trains for women, Puri said, "Our scheme will also cover most girl students and female senior citizens. We want to implement it through a technology-based solution, so there is no misuse of the facility."
It should be noted that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is a 50:50 joint venture (JV) between the Government of Nation Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) and the Government of India.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
