Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has conducted a successful test of an indigenously designed and developed inertially-guided bomb weighing 500 kilograms, reports ANI.
The test took place at the Pokhran firing range located in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district. The bomb was able to strike its target accurately at a range of 30 km.
An inertially-guided bomb is a type of precision-guided munition, also known as smart bombs.
DRDO has previously tested other indigenously developed smart munitions such as a Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon (SAAW) and an anti-tank guided missile launched from a helicopter.
Such smart bombs or precision munitions are useful in eliminating targets with a high degree of accuracy while avoiding or minimising collateral damage. These weapons have been extensively adopted as part of the modern arsenals of the US, Russian and Chinese militaries.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
