In a bid to boost adoption of the electric vehicles in the country, the government is looking to amend the motor vehicle norms for exempting the Battery Operated Vehicles (BOV) from payment of fee for issue or renewal of Registration Certificate (RC).
In this regard, a draft notification has been issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on 27 May to further amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
The amendment proposes "to exempt Battery Operated Vehicles (BOV) from payment of fees for the purpose of issue or renewal of Registration Certificate (RC) and assignment of new registration mark".
In a statement, the ministry said that the proposed amendments has been notified to encourage e-mobility in the country.
Further, the ministry has sought comments on the draft notification from the general public and all stakeholders within a period of thirty days from the date of issuance of the document.
The development comes as the government aims to make India a 100-per cent electric-vehicle nation by 2030. However, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the ambitious timeline is yet to be ascertained.

The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
